Book Review: Life’s Golden Ticket: A Story About Second Chances

Book Review: Life’s Golden Ticket: A Story About Second Chances

by Brendon Burchard

My Rating: ***** (5 out of 5 stars)

Why Did I Read?

I read this book because I got a promotional email from Brendon Burchard offering the book and some of his inspirational videos for only the cost of shipping the book ($5.00).  I enjoyed his other books, The Charge and The Millionaire Messenger, so I wanted to give this one a try, too! (Click on the book cover above to get your free copy for only the cost of shipping).

Summary (from Goodreads)

The classic inspirational parable from the top motivation and marketing trainer and #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Millionaire Messenger—a triumphant tale of personal growth and change that will inspire anyone who has ever wished for a second chance.

What if you were handed a golden ticket that could magically start your life anew?

That question is at the heart of Life’s Golden Ticket. Brendon Burchard tells the story of a man who is so trapped in the prison of his past that he cannot see the possibilities, the choices, and the gifts before him. To soothe his fiancée Mary, clinging to life in a hospital bed, the man takes the envelope she offers and heads to an old, abandoned amusement park that she begs him to visit.

To his surprise, when he steps through the rusted entrance gates, the park magically comes to life. Guided by the wise groundskeeper Henry, the man will encounter park employees, answer difficult questions, overcome obstacles, listen to lessons from those wiser than he, and take a hard look at himself.

At the end of his journey, the man opens Mary’s mysterious envelope. Inside is a golden ticket—the final phase in turning his tragic life’s story of loss and regret into a triumphant tale of love and redemption.

What Did I Think/Recommendation

I loved this book!  I was expecting this to be another non-fiction self-help book like Brendon Burchard’s other books (all of which I loved), but I was surprised when I began reading to find this was actually a story.  It was an easy read, and it held my interest throughout the entire book.  This book helps you to take a good look at your life and ask yourself if you are truly happy.  If you are not, it helps you to think about steps you can take to change that, to overcome your fears, and to let go of bitterness and other things from your past that may be keeping you from following your dreams.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in personal growth.  There are many valuable life lessons taught all throughout the book.  Although I didn’t consider this book to be life-changing for me, I think it could be life-changing for so many people!

Here are a few takeaways I got from this book:

  • Think before you speak. Words can hurt FOREVER!
  • If you are the recipient of harsh words, don’t take it personally. Recognize that it has nothing to do with you and is just a result of the hurt inside of the other person. Hurt people hurt people. Recognize that and don’t ever take anyone else’s harsh words personally.
  • Recognize that everyone does and says what they do for a reason. We are all just doing our best. Don’t judge

Favorite Quote(s)

The miracle makers in this world are the people who live by choice and live to contribute. (p.181)

Though you cannot recall it ever happening, a spell has been cast upon you, and it has mesmerized you into believing that you are not good enough and that there is something wrong with you.  This spell is Society’s Spell, and it has made you secretly feel inadequate, ugly, weak, slow, small, useless, and helpless for far too long.  Tonight we break that spell. The Millionaire Messenger:  Make a Difference and a Fortune Sharing Your Advice

by Brendon Burchard

The Millionaire Messenger cover

My Rating ***** (5 out of 5 stars)

Why Did I Read?

I am inspired by Brendon Burchard, and I would eventually like to read all of his books.  Until now, the only book I have read of his was The Charge (another 5 star book…see my review).  I have a long list of books I would love to read.  The Millionaire Messenger was on the list, but it was not one that I felt I needed to read right away.  Until a few weeks ago.  When I watched one of Brendon’s free videos promoting his program Experts Academy, he referenced The Millionaire Messenger often and I felt called to read it right away.  So, I got it from my library and began to read…

Summary (From Goodreads)

“In The Millionaire Messenger, Brendon Burchard pulls back the curtains on the once-secretive “expert industry” and shows how to become an influential and highly paid advice expert through websites, books, speeches, seminars, coaching, consulting, and online programs.

Blessed to receive life’s golden ticket – a second chance – after surviving a dramatic car accident, Burchard has dedicated his life to helping others find their voice, live more fully, and follow their dreams.

By following his 10-step program, average, ordinary people can learn to package their struggles, successes, research, or life’s story into advice for others and become experts on any given topic.  In the industry of people who share their advice and knowledge with the world and get paid for it, Burchard is the “guru’s guru.”
If you’ve ever wondered how the gurus spread their message, serve others, and build a real business, then this is a must-read.”

What Did I Think/Recommendation

I found this book to be both inspiring and motivating.  There is so much information in there, and it is difficult to take it all in at once.  It definitely is not a leisurely read.  To get the most out of it, you must do the work.  I found it helpful to have my journal nearby and answer the questions that were presented as I went through the book.  I especially enjoyed the questions he presented at the beginning.  He asks the reader to list 5 things they have learned about a variety of different topics.  I enjoyed answering those questions and learned a lot about myself through that exercise.

I feel like I need to read this book again because it is so packed with content and there are so many of his ideas I want to implement into my work.  If you have a message you want to share with the world, as I do, then I highly recommend reading this book and doing the work involved along the way.

Book Review: The Charge

The Charge by Brendon Burchard

Activating the 10 Human Drives That Make You Feel Alive

The Charge CoverMy rating:  ***** 5 out of 5 stars

Why Did I Read?

I discovered Brendon Burchard several months ago when he was offering a free on-line video about setting up a web site.  I was impressed by his wisdom and knowledge and his willingness to freely share some of the secrets to his success.  I thought he was a terrific speaker, and he had an energy about him that kept my interest and made me want to keep watching.  When his book “The Motivation Manifesto” came out a few weeks ago, I decided to see if my library had any of his previous books.  They had The Charge, so I decided to start out by reading this one first.

Summary (from inside the book cover)

On a dark and steamy Caribbean night, Brendon Burchard stood bleeding atop the crumpled hood of his wrecked car. That night he learned about mortality, discovering that at the end of our lives we will all ask, “Did I live? Did I love? Did I matter?” Since that fateful night, Brendon has lived a fully charged life, and he’s helped millions of people around the globe transform their lives and feel more alive, engaged, and fulfilled. Brendon observes that the emotional energy of the world has flat-lined, and he sets out to fix it. People are stressed, restless, and wanting more out of life. Despite the fact that most people have what they “need” to be happy, they rarely feel the levels of excitement, engagement, or satisfaction they deserve. So what’s the solution? In The Charge, Brendon argues that the only way to measurably improve the quality of your life is to learn how to activate the very 10 drives that make you most human. These drives are your desires for more control, competence, congruence, caring, connection, change, challenge, creative expression, contribution, and consciousness. These drives shape everything you think, feel, and do in life, so understanding and mastering them is critical to your success and happiness. Strategically activating these drives on a consistent basis is the fastest path to living a fully charged life. Harnessing our human drives is not easy; if it were, we wouldn’t see so much restlessness in the world. That’s why Brendon has devised what he calls the true “activators” of human experience—a series of powerful yet simple actions you can take to radically increase your levels of energy, engagement, and fulfillment in all areas of your life. What Brendon uncovers in The Charge will surprise and challenge you. It turns out that most of the ways we seek to meet our human drives are actually counterproductive. We all want more control, for example, but seeking to have more certainty in our daily lives or to control other people will actually decrease our levels of control (and happiness). We have a deep desire for change, too, but we often fail to make the right kinds of change that would make us feel more alive and in command of our lives. In The Charge, Brendon helps us overcome these mistakes and illuminates the path for strategically and intelligently activating our 10 human drives so that we can have the one thing we all want: more life in our lives!

What Did I Think/Recommendation

I rated this book a perfect 5 out of 5 stars!  I literally felt charged while reading this.  The book re-ignited my passion for a project I had been putting off.  Now I am waking up again at 5am (without an alarm clock) excited to start my day and make progress on my project.  In The Charge, Brendon says his job is to encourage and challenge people to go for their dreams, and he does exactly that.  To get the most of this book, I highly recommend keeping a journal as Brendon suggests.  Do not just read through the book.  Take the time to stop and fully answer each question he presents.  The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.

So, what are the qualities of someone living the Charged Life?  Here is Brendon’s description (p.23).  Those living a charged life:

  • Enjoy the journey they’re on no matter what obstacles present themselves.
  • Are deeply enthusiastic about facing life’s challenges and designing their own destinies.
  • Know they are works in progress, but they take pleasure in shaping themselves and reinventing their realities.
  • Look forward to the opportunities for change and growth.
  • Focus on contributing to the world.
  • Their credo is:

If you would like to start living a Charged Life, I encourage you to read this book! 🙂
